Thank you to all who wrote.

It did turn out that adding the file extension did the trick.  I 
found that if an image is sourced in an <img> tag, the browser knows 
it's an image, w/o needing the file extension.  However, when trying 
to retrieve it as a separate file, w/o being embedding in html, it 
seems some browsers (mine) did not recognize the file and some did.
